VANCOUVER ISLAND
ISLAND
BLACKTAIL DEER

Looking for something new to hunt on Vancouver Island? How about a Sitka Blacktail Deer?  Thanks to the efforts of Boone & Crockett, Safari Club International and the Dallas Safari Club, exciting new DNA research has been conducted into the history of mule and blacktail deer.

The DNA study tracked the early blacktail migration from a single refuge along the Pacific Northwest coast, and refuted the idea that blacktail deer persisted in one or more northern refugia. The data suggested that blacktail deer re-colonized areas in accordance with the pattern of glacial retreat, with an initial northward migration along a coastal route and secondary re-colonization inland.

The study identified a limited genetic distinction between Columbia and Sitka blacktail deer. One of the key findings was that 'Sitka black-tailed deer are not strongly differentiated from Columbian black-tailed deer, which suggests that the Sitka may be a coastal form of blacktail influenced by its environment'. With this new finding in mind, Grand Slam Club/Ovis (GSCO) have classified the Vancouver Island blacktail deer as Sitka for the Super Ten® and Super Slam® trophy record books.
